5 Common Issues with Duct Work

Air duct work is often out-of-sight and out-of-mind, so servicing them are often the last thing you think about doing so your ducts are often left to harbor a host of hidden problems that can lead to serious (and costly) consequences. Below are five common issues you may want to ask your technician about duct service:

  1. Contamination
Dust, pollen, animal dander, mold, and other contaminants can collect in your ductwork, leading to indoor air quality problems.
  2. Blockage
A duct mainly consists of narrow passages that can easily get clogged with large collections of dust and hair particles, but also with insects, rodents, and nests.
  3. Poor Sealing
If duct registers and grills are poorly sealed, contaminants such as debris and insects can get inside more easily, allowing filtered and conditioned air to escape.
  4. Leakage
Inadequate sealing causes your ducts to lose air, prevent your HVAC system from maintaining a comfortable temperature, and cause heating and cooling units to work harder.
  5. Design Flaws
Poorly designed ductwork can have obstructions that make it prone to collecting dirt and getting clogged. Kinks and twists can block airflow.
